The latest book in Eric Nylunds Halo series is released
October 12, 2006 - Few books based on videogames are worth reading. I know, I've read a bunch. The Halo books, however, The
Fall of Reach, The Flood, and First Strike, are worth your while. Based on Bungie's Halo games, these books explore a unique
sci-fi universe that's deep, intriguing and imaginative. Yeah, yeah, I know, books based on first-person shooters have no
depth. And Del Rey books often have a rather mundane formula -- they're packed with terse muscular sentences, and in the case
of the Halo books, they're filled with all sort of futuristic military speak.
But the Halo books do something more than just flesh out a fruitless videogame story arch. The Halo universe is deep with
both biblical and mythical allusions, and the game barely scratches the surface of the real story. The books explore the history
of the SPARTAN program, give real human elements to the characters, and create tension between the military and the likes
of Master Chief. In short, while it's true, these are action-based books, they provide real and needed depth to the Halo games.
